Zero-Hour Protocol

A brutal truth: You can fail your test before ever leaving the car park. Ensure these checks are flawless.

Before the road test begins, the examiner will assess your knowledge of the vehicle. This is divided into "Under the Bonnet" (technical checks) and "Inside the Cabin" (Secondary Controls). Hesitation here sets a bad tone for the rest of the test. Memorize this checklist.

PHASE 1

Under The Bonnet

Engine Oil

Identify the dipstick. Explain how to pull it out, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and check that the level is between MIN and MAX.

Coolant

Identify the coolant reservoir. Point out the MIN and MAX markings on the side of the transparent tank.

Brake Fluid

Identify the brake fluid reservoir. Point out the MIN and MAX markers.

Windscreen Washer

Identify the washer fluid reservoir (usually marked with a windshield/water symbol).

Power Steering

(If applicable to your car) Identify the fluid reservoir or state that the steering is electronic.

PHASE 2

Secondary Controls

The examiner will ask you to demonstrate how to operate the following controls without starting the engine (turn ignition to ON to power electronics).

Windscreen Wipers

Front and rear wipers, plus squirting washer fluid.

Lights / Dipped

Turn on side lights, dipped headlights, and main beams.

Fog Lights

Rear fog light (must know when to use it - heavy fog/snow).

Demisters

Front and rear window demisters.

Hazard Lights

Location and operation of the hazard warning triangle switch.

Horn

Sound the horn briefly.

The Tyre Check

If the examiner asks you what you should check regarding your tyres, you must state three specific things:

  1. Tread Depth (Must be at least 1.6mm across the center 3/4 of the tyre).
  2. Tyre Pressure (Check manual, adjust based on load).
  3. General Condition (No cuts, bulges, or exposed cord on the sidewalls).

Eliminate the unknown.
